Spring is in the air! Along with the blossoming of many of our favorite blooms (and the on-set of dreaded hay fever) comes the yearly spring cleaning! Love it or hate it, spring cleaning is a good way to bid goodbye to the harsh winter and usher in new beginnings. But did you know that your HVAC system needs to be on your spring-cleaning list, too?
This spring season, call in for HVAC maintenance to ensure it runs smoothly the rest of the year.
Keep on reading to learn how spring affects your HVAC system and how you can address different concerns.
Spring Season HVAC Maintenance Benefits
Spring is the time of the year when it’s beginning to warm up, but not to the point of needing daily air conditioning. This is why this is the optimum time to have it cleaned and repaired. You need to have your HVAC system cleaned before you begin using it frequently. The more you use it, the more dust and dirt accumulates within the different parts, making it less efficient. After all, you wouldn’t want to find out in the middle of summer that your A/C isn’t running as it should, would you?
HVAC Tips for Spring Season
There are a few things you need to have checked and repaired to make sure your HVAC system is running as it should.
1. Covers
Your HVAC covers are something you need to keep a close eye on, particularly if your system is outdoors. Your covers filter dust, dirt, and debris from the outside and prevents it from being dispersed into your home. Check your HVAC covers to see if there are any leaves, branches, or dust bunnies hiding underneath it. Clean up any dirt you see on the outside, remove the unit covers, and clear up anything that’s managed to get caught underneath.
2. Filters
Anything that gets through the covers goes into the filter. It’s basically your last line of defense before the air gets blown into your home. So, it’s not surprising to see fine dust and debris particles lodged within in. Make sure you check your HVAC’s filters once a month to ensure your system is running at peak conditions.
3. Ducts, vents, and insulation
Filters aren’t 100% foolproof, and smaller particles can manage to sneak through it. When that happens, it often gets trapped in the ducts and vents. Don’t forget to thoroughly check these to make sure nothing is stuck within it.
4. Thermostat
With constant wear-and-tear, your thermostat may begin showing signs of inaccuracy. What once was a true 70 degrees may no longer be the case after several years of use. While there isn’t a definitive way of checking this (except for having a room thermometer in place), you can notice when a room is not as cold as it once was, even if the HVAC system’s temperature has not been changed.
5. Coils
Your system’s condenser coils are one of the most vital parts of the machine. They’re what keep your unit running as it should be, and as efficiently as possible. The compressor pulls the refrigerant liquid through the tubing in your system’s evaporator coil and then passes it into the unit via the expansion valve. If your condenser coil is clogged, it can slow down the process or even stop it entirely. When this happens, the unit’s fan has to work harder in order to pump in more air into the system. Regular maintenance and servicing can address this in a jiffy, though!
