Did you know that bulk of your home’s energy expenditure is from your HVAC system? That means more than half of your electricity bill is caused by either your air-conditioning or your heating. HVAC maintenance is crucial so your HVAC system runs efficiently, which can save you thousands of dollars down the line. In this article, we’ll be going through our tried-and-tested HVAC maintenance tips, so keep on reading!
How to Maintain Your HVAC at Home
1. Schedule regular professional HVAC preventive maintenance services
It may seem od
d to start the list with this but stay with us. You need to have a professional take a look at your HVAC unit at least twice a year (once in the spring for air-conditioning and another in the fall for heating) so that they can spot and repair any big problems that may be brewing beneath the surface. This allows your HVAC unit to run smoothly and makes it easier to conduct smaller maintenance tasks throughout the year.
Preventive maintenance services include:
- Checking the thermostat calibration and settings
- Checking the electrical wiring
- Lubricating all moving parts
- Inspecting and cleaning the drains and coils
- Monitoring the system controls
- Cleaning and adjusting the blower components
- Topping up the refrigerant
- Checking the fuel line connections
- Inspecting the gas pressure, burner combustion, and heat exchanger
2. Change the Filters
The filters, you guessed it, filters any dust, dirt, and debris from being blown into your home. Because of this, hair, pollen, and even leaves can get stuck within it. Cleaning and changing the filter makes it easier for air to be directed from the outside of your home going inside, thereby consuming less energy. On top of this, it can also greatly improve the quality of air being circulated in your home. For best results, make sure your filters are cleaned or changed once a month.
3. Inspect Your HVAC System
As your cleaning and changing the filters, make it a point to inspect the rest of your unit as well. This will include checking the thermostat, removing any debris stuck under the cover of your unit, and looking for any leaks in the piping. Other things you need to look out for include:
- Battery status of your thermostat
- How your condensate system is draining
- Your filter access and cabinet doors (and that the close securely)
- The attachment on the flue system
- Anything blocking the registers and returns
- Mold and dust within the unit
- That your outdoor unit is level and stable
4. Clear the Space Around Your Outdoor Unit
HVACs work by sucking in air from the outside and either cooling or heating it up as it blasts it through drains and pipes to enter your home. This is why it’s important to make sure your unit has access to air. When your outdoor unit is located within a pile of furniture or junk, it makes it difficult to draw in the air it needs to function. Apart from this, the unnecessary clutter around it makes it more prone to gathering dust, which then finds its way into the filters.
5. Clean the Outside Unit
How clean the outside unit is is just as important as how clean the inside is. The outside unit is your HVAC system’s first line of defense when it comes to filtering out dirt and debris. This is why its common for small branches, leaves, and grass clippings to become lodged within it. Remove all visible debris from the outside unit at least once a week. Once its clear, hose down any dirt that’s stuck on it. Make sure to have at least two feet of clearance between your unit and any plants for proper air circulation.
